The 2026 Summer Intensive series explores love’s many facets as a Public Practice.

What does it mean to expand our notions of love beyond personal experiences of emotion and into the realm of collective action? What resistive possibilities does love teach in times of tyranny, fascism, and genocide? What does love require of us now? And how does love shape what comes after?

The Public Love Summer Intensive series offers two streams of participation. The first is Yorchhā Jugaad; the second is Buniyaad: Foundations of Yorchhā. Students may apply to one or both.

  • Yorchhā Jugaad is a methodology of 'hacking' systemic structures to connect to our joy and freedom. It is a devised practice crossing traditions of dhak drumming in Bengal festivals with the density of club music to gather community in an immersive experience of shared rhythm, space, and values.

Each day explores a love-related theme, contextualized by the words of BIPOC revolutionary artists and activists. Participants spend the first portion of the day experiencing the Jugaad methodology, organized as a constantly shifting bricolage of gestures and rhythms danced through the space. In the second portion of the day, participants investigate the daily theme with choreographic scores, improvisation, and personal or collective reflection.

  • Buniyaad, meaning “foundation” in Bengali, is an immersive study in the technical, intellectual, emotional, and creative foundations of Yorchhā, Ananya Dance Theatre’s contemporary, transnational feminist form. We invite a cohort of passionate and dedicated dance practitioners to experience Ananya Dance Theatre’s rich rehearsal process: training in the form alongside Company Artists, experiencing the Shawngrām social-justice methodology of crafting abstract stories, and embodying excerpts of current repertoire that responds to the resistive world-making of these times.
