Ananya Dance Theatre & the Shawngram Institute present Onurawnon/Vibration

June 15, 2019 @ 6:00 PM - 6:45 PM

Free

Ananya Dance Theatre and the Shawngram Institute for Performance & Social Justice present Onurawnon/Vibration, performances of choreography by Toan Thanh Doan and Brotherhood Dance/Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. & Ricarrdo Valentine.

We Were Born Soft | Choreographed & performed by Toan Thanh Doan | Music: Cai Duyen | Composer: Ngo Hong Quang

The piece explores the search for softness in a world that abandons human vulnerability. Here, we are pushed to the edge of hardness, shielding ourselves from the forces of pain and norms. This dance is a statement of grounding in radical softness: “I would rather fear than feel nothing.”

How to Survive a Plague | Choreographed & performed by Brother(hood) Dance!/Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. & Ricarrdo Valentine Music: Starr Busby, Yusef Lateef, Thomas Mapfumo, Roberta Flack, The O’Jays, War, The JB’s | Text: Assoto Saint, Ricarrdo Valentine, Ade Ola, Boghuma Kabisen Titanji | Photography: Jousé Azor | Costume designer: Shane Ballard | Research Advisor: Mario LaMothe

An interdisciplinary meditation on the artistic generational gap among those lost in the global AIDS epidemic. Brother(hood) Dance! investigates who survives and whose stories are told during and after their lives. This work explores the methods of healing, care-giving, and living testimonies by creating an intentional space with sound, movement, and aroma. This ritualistic experience will venerate the Black African bodies that were exiled from the urgency of care and shunned by their communities and government. How do we connect this work (how to survive a plague) as a reverential gesture to lost ancestral artistic dreams?
This event will be followed by RadicalBliss Dance Imprint Shoeless Music/Dance Jam from 6:45pm to 8pm.
