Process

Typically the company invites artists and activists from different communities of color who believe in the power of art to push for social change to join the Ananya Dance Theatre community. All women join as apprentices and go through a long and intense training process in the classical dance style, Odissi, yoga, martial art forms such as Chhau, which creates a strong foundation for their movement. They also simultaneously participate in workshops focusing on anti-violence, community-building, anti-racism, and health and nutrition. All members are respected for what they bring to this community and individual and collective leadership are encouraged.   The members of Ananya Dance Theatre, diverse in age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, and profession, enrich the company with their deep and wide-ranging understanding of what it means to be a woman of color working, through artistic metaphors, towards peace and justice in the world today.
