Betsy McDermott Altheimer
I am in my first term on the board of directors, but was a consultant to Ananya Dance Theatre prior to that. I believe that ADT is making dance to heal the world. They are dancing the truth of women’s lives and providing space for remembering, honoring, and elevating these stories.
My favorite moments with the company are always in the invitation to the dance. Often, they invite the audience on stage or to move among the dancers. It is an important call to action: to join the dance, to occupy the space, and share in a movement. There is a spectrum, from vulnerability to fearlessness, in both dance and activism. Everyone finds their own way.
I live four blocks from the Mississippi River and was born and raised on the Great Lakes Erie and Michigan. My ancestors are Irish and Italian, which means I have loud feelings. I am an anti-racism activist, feminist, artist, writer and soccer mom.
